FDA warns of ‘miracle’ treatment that could have ‘life-threatening’ side effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is once again warning consumers about the serious dangers of a product that uses bleach as a key ingredient but is marketed as a “cure-all.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) press release concerns a product called Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), which is widely sold on the Internet.
This product has several names including Master Mineral Solution, Miracle Mineral Supplement, Chlorine Dioxide Protocol, and Water Purification Solution.
Although the FDA has not approved this product, sellers advertise it as antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial.
Despite the lack of medical research data, proponents claim that MMS can effectively treat a variety of diseases, including cancer, HIV, autism, acne, malaria, influenza, Lyme disease and hepatitis.
The product is a liquid containing 28% sodium chlorite, which the manufacturer diluted with mineral water. Consumers need to mix the solution with citric acid, such as that found in lemon or lime juice.
This mixture is mixed with citric acid to turn it into chlorine dioxide. The FDA describes it as a “strong bleach.” In fact, paper mills often use chlorine dioxide to bleach paper, and water companies also use the chemical to purify drinking water.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets a maximum level of 0.8 milligrams (mg) per liter, but just one drop of MMS contains 3–8 mg.
Consuming these products is equivalent to consuming bleach. Consumers should not use these products and parents should not give them to their children under any circumstances.
People who took MMS filed reports with the FDA. The report lists a long list of possible side effects, including severe vomiting and diarrhea, life-threatening low blood pressure, and liver failure.
It is disturbing that some MMS manufacturers claim that vomiting and diarrhea are positive signs that the mixture can cure people of their ailments.
Dr. Sharpless continued, “The FDA will continue to pursue those who market this dangerous product and will take appropriate enforcement action against those who attempt to circumvent FDA regulation and market unapproved and potentially dangerous products to the American public.”
”Our priority is to protect the public from products that pose a risk to their health, and we will send a strong and clear message that these products can cause serious harm.”
MMS is not a new product, it has been on the market for over a decade. Scientologist Jim Hamble “discovered” the substance and promoted it as a cure for autism and other disorders.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously issued a press release regarding the chemical. The 2010 press release warned, “Consumers who have taken MMS should immediately stop using it and throw it away.”
Going a little further, a 2015 press release from the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned: “If the solution is diluted less than stated, it can cause damage to the intestines and red blood cells and even respiratory failure.” The FSA also advised people who have the products to “throw them away.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in its latest press release that anyone who “experiences adverse health effects after consuming this product should seek immediate medical attention.” The agency also asks people to report adverse events through the FDA’s MedWatch safety information program.
